SUNPOWER FOR LIFE

SUNPOWER FOR LIFE is an original SESSA (Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa) initiative and a “branding for good” platform, providing opportunities for government, parastatals, big business and donors to support renewable energy installations for beneficiaries, ranging from schools, clinics, hospitals to vulnerable and marginalised communities challenged by energy security.

When one considers that water heating accounts for up to 42-45% of the electricity consumed by an average household (depending on the solar system) substantial energy savings can be achieved. Using solar is the eco-savvy choice in terms of the associated financial and  environmental benefits. For instance, a 150 litre solar water heater will replace 4.5 kWh of electricity per day, resulting in the following environmental annual savings:

SUNPOWER FOR LIFE is underscored by a clear sense of social entrepreneurship and engineering good work in communities where energy-poverty is endemic.  Utilising the SESSA member network to install solar water heating systems means that all installations exact to the highest standards and norms.

In addition to emissions reductions quotas that will accrue to the donors/social investors, theprojects are eligible for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) which trade in the voluntarySouth Africa renewable energy market. Investors will be able to offset their emissions in a trulysustainable and measurable manner through the purchase of RECs. The RECs will producesome of the following benefits:
• support for growing the green sector and green collar jobs;

• grid stability through an improved energy mix;

• the advancement of previously disadvantaged communities;

• displace environmental degradation and other externalities of energy supply.
