• Commenced Work in 2001 as an EIT with a major Oil and Gas Company. I was promoted to Process Engineer in 6 months due to quality of work done on a Wax Reactor.
• In 2002, I left the company to join the Paper Industry in KZN. I moved due to family reasons. I worked for Paper Production companies for the next 5 years. During my time in the paper industry, as a process engineer, my work involved both plant support/optimisation and project engineering and management. I was involved in a R250 million project as a plant process engineer. I was also instrumental in assisting my plant to achieve ISO14000.  I was also responsible for the initiation, design, installation and management of a R40 million plant. During this project, I was required to work with contractors from Finland, Switzerland and Germany. I was also involved in a R2 billion project as one of the section process engineers. I was also the innovation manager at one of the companies I worked for and I initiated & implemented projects which saved the company approx. R2 million.
• In 2007, I again joined an Oil and Gas producer as Senior Process Engineer. Thereafter, I have been promoted twice and I am currently a Principle Process Engineer. I have been involved in the core process, Gas Circuit. I have been involved in both plant support/optimisation, management of process engineers and project engineering. I am currently involved with a Growth Project (R2.5 billion) as the Gas Reforming Lead Process Engineer. I have been involved with this project from concept phase and we are currently in construction.  I was required to work in USA (Houston) for approximately 2 years to oversee the engineering of this project. This has been a schedule driven project (without sacrificing quality) and thus far, we have been able to meet our project deadlines.

Upon arriving, I discovered that he had been scammed a few weeks earlier and that was the reason for his negative attitude. The client was so impressed with my approach and demeanour that he decided to invest more money with the bank. In fact, he asked for me to personally handle it even though it was not part of my department. My Company ended up with the required documents as well as more money invested in the bank.

The director of engineering reports to the company president and works closely with other functional leaders in the company, including those in finance, sales, and project management.  The vice president of engineering is responsible for all of the company’s engineering activities around project bidding and execution.

Firstly a secure company where I can settle down for the next 20 Years of my career and experience continues improvement and growth. My key responsibilities would include having junior draughtsman work under my supervision but not necessarily a managerial position. Also a company where my manager can guide me properly that I can achieve my best individual performance and help others to grow within themselves as well. What are the key responsibilities and accountabilities of your current/most recent position?

• I am currently working as a Mechanical designer draughtsman. I have one designer reporting to me, who is mainly doing mould designing for panels used on diamond screening machines.
• I am also currently busy developing a blast resistant A.T.M. drop down unit as well as a blast resistant A.T.M open top unit ,front loader as well as a rear loader, for our sister company. Our first prototype will be tested in February this year. This entails mainly sheet metal designing work as well as tapping into the experience I built up at a major Safes Company, after doing quite a lot of blasting tests on A.T.M.’s and developing the perfect design that could resist a commercial explosive attack of up to 600grams.This design I developed was proven to be the best blast resistant A.T.M in the world with a hundred percent success rate at every A.T.M build so far. The second best one in the world designed by a Dutch company could withstand only 250grams.
• Because of experience I’ve gained at previous companies I was appointed to redesigning our company’s factory layout that will be implemented at our new premises we are moving to this year.
• Furthermore I am busy redesigning our current rubber moulds by using the mould flow analysis as a guideline to develop the most economic as well as cheapest mould possible.
• I am also in charge of designing all plastic mould that will be used at “Jet-Master”.
• Part time I am working on a private venture redesigning a Superlink trailer for “Ramkatt trailers”. This is a Tandem trailer of a total length of 18,3 Meters.
• Another off my daily tasks is to do planning for the designer reporting to me as well as myself to co-ordinate with the tool room planning schedule, making sure things are running smoothly on their side.
• The rest will be day-to-day filing and Drawing office procedure duties.

• I would like to get into designing bigger products such as truck trailers, heavy earthmoving equipment like caterpillars, crane and heavy mining machinery equipment made by companies like “HITACHI”, “BELL”,”OSBORN”,”VOLVO” etc. Designing these products is more hands on engineering with higher calibre people who I can learn from and expand my designing experience and world.
• Research and development of new products gives me a huge job satisfaction. When I can see what I designed or developed at the end of a project, I see job creation and dynamic teamwork that is healthy for financial growth for everybody involved and the economy of our country.

What are the manufacturing processes/ technologies that you have experience in relevant to your ideal position/ next career steps?

Alias design is a new designing technology on the market. This is a total new way of thinking when it comes to C.A.D design. This is also known as free form design used in the Car, Aviation and Boat industries. I want to enrol this year doing an Alias design course corresponding with an overseas company who will supply me with the necessary exercises and training material over the internet. This is technology that South Africa is not using yet, or is still young at. Future steps would be to try and move into the Car industry to become a product designer by using Alias. The course I want to start this year includes the designing of an Audi A4 body by using this Alias technology.

What are some of your greatest achievements (When and how have you saved your employers time, money and resources)?

• Recognition award at C.B.I. improvement on a terminal box machine when I was still studying, that saved the company close to R500 000.
• Designed a B400 jet, King Air 1900 and Bell 206 helicopter flight simulator. This was like playing with toys everyday. I also did a lot off hands on work like building the simulators so it looked and functioned like the real thing.
• Designed the best blast resistant safe in the world – being used today by Capitec Bank, FNB and Standard Bank. The design had a hundred percent success rate.  Orders of safes were between R250 mil – R270 mil in the last three years in total and saving for the banks close to those figures as well. My minimum goal was not financial success but to stop the criminals from bombing the A.T.M’s and earning a living out off crime. Hurting our families with weapons that are being bought by their earnings out off these A.T.M’s.  During the recession we employed close to 50 more people to build the A.T.M’s when all the other companies were laying off people.

If you were to illuminate your skills and abilities along with your greater purpose and passions in life, how would you describe yourself?

My greater purpose is to be remembered one day as a person who made a difference. Designing products that results in job creation. There is nothing more rewarding than being part of something that causes growth for my company, country and the direct people around me. I believe I am very focused and motivated, but when I achieve success I also want to reap financial success to secure my wife as well as myself. One big passion was always to teach people what I know and help them to grow. Knowing that everything I do every minute of my life is worth it.

What do you absolutely love doing?

Learning something new everyday even if it is the person that opened the gate at work for me in the morning. Scheming about new ideas and improvements. Looking constantly for that one thing that is in front of everybody’s eyes and was so obvious that nobody could see it, but at the end off the day the one thing that made the difference.  I love interacting with other people and work very hard to please my employer to trust me with any task given to me.

Describe the kind of company you would like to work for including the culture and values it should possess:

A company that is well organised, got systems in place. I am a strong believer that conflict is sometimes healthy to wake things up, but prefer to eliminate it at all times end measure each one on its own merit. The culture must be a healthy hard working environment, but not in isolation. In other word a drawing office setup where people are serious with what they are doing. I do not have much time for lazy people and try not to be influenced by their negativity. Negativity rubs off on people and hate to take part in negative gossiping about other people. Respect for other people is the most important and to be recognized when you achieve something, also to give other people recognition when they achieve something good that was to the benefit to all.
