The Model Village
The key objective of this business is to provide a practical model for the development of rural communities in Africa so that they become :
- environmentally constructive and sustainable,
- economically more productive and valuable,
- socially more empowered and cohesive,
- centres of learning and personal development.
This model is being developed in line with the Millenium Development Goals of halving poverty in Africa within the next 8 years, by 2015.
- This practical model for the development of marginalised communities includes a framework around which these individuals & families can build a sustainable and environmentally-constructive livelihood.
- This model provides all of the plans, directions and access to resources for creating or transforming a village to sustainability within a period.
- This design for a sustainable village can be developed in a phased approach, depending on the location and existing facilities and resources.
- The basic elements of the model village include :
- A potable clean water supply, with waste water recycling,
- Food production activities for internal consumption,
- Larger agricultural activities based on permaculture principles for outside markets,
- Improved building materials & construction technologies for more durable housing,
- Renewable and clean energy resources,
- Access to information & communications services,
- Potential for development of eco-tourism activities in the area if possible.
Enshrine Projects is currently bringing together teams of professionals with the appropriate skills to develop this model and to implement this model in a number of places in Africa.
The secondary aim of this project is to encourage skills-development for the residents of these model villages so that they are empowered to develop themselves and their communities within the grater social fabric of the economy. This process will therefore be replicated across greater geographic areas as more villages adopt this model for their own development. It is intended that the villagers themselves will take ownership of this model and will enhance the basic model and tailor it for the particular constraints of their environment and the situations pertaining to other villages. These enhancements may include :
- Modular elements within the model that can be adopted for specific circumstances
- Land use and forestry options that construct the environment and provide economic benefits
- Sustainable food production and delivery to outside markets
- Production of building materials & supplies for other areas
